Getting attention for a House race in Los Angeles in a presidential year is hard.

So two Democrats running against one another in an open-seat primary in a California House race are seeking to drum up attention for their candidacies by staging events to protest the one candidate sucking up all the oxygen in 2016: Donald Trump.

Former Hermosa Beach City Councilwoman Nanette Barragán and state Sen. Isadore Hall will attend two separate events in their district Tuesday protesting Trump's arrival to the state for Wednesday's GOP primary debate. The debate is being held about an hour away at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in the Simi Valley.

Both Hall and Barragán are competing in a Democratic primary in California's 44th District to replace Rep. Janice Hahn — a Democrat foregoing re-election in 2016 to run for a Los Angeles County supervisor seat.

Hall will host a news conference at the USS Iowa — a battleship in Los Angeles where Trump will deliver a national security address Tuesday — calling on the state of California to pull its investments from projects linked to Trump.

Barragán — who also released a video "welcoming" Trump to the Golden State — will join a protest Tuesday afternoon in San Pedro protesting Trump's comments about Mexican immigrants.

California's 44th District, a Hispanic-majority seat located in and around Compton, is one of the strongest Democratic districts in the country. President Barack Obama carried it by a 71-point margin in 2012.

In California, the two highest vote recipients regardless of party advance to the general election. And with such a heavily Democratic district, there's a chance Hall and Barragán could take the two top spots and face each other again on Election Day.

The race is rated a Safe Democratic contest by the Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report /Roll call.
